What Is the Rifle Standard Gold?
The Rifle Standard Gold, also called the Mini-Navy Qual, is a short, demanding test of rifle control, reload discipline, and marksmanship fundamentals under time pressure. It's a modification of the popular Modified Navy Qual, adapted to closer ranges to reward smooth mechanics over rushed reactions. Every action from mounting the rifle to breaking the final shot counts.
The Course of Fire
The drill uses 15 rounds fired across three targets at progressively closer distances, with mandatory reloads between each string. Here's the exact sequence:
- Start: Ready position
- String 1: Fire 5 rounds at T1 (20 yards)
- Reload
- String 2: Fire 5 rounds at T2 (10 yards)
- Reload
- String 3: Fire 5 rounds at T3 (5 yards)
The entire course must be completed within 15 seconds total. Use a TCT MK4 target or NRA B8 with an 8-inch scoring ring.
Scoring and Classification
Hits are scored strictly as hit or miss on the 8-inch ring. A minimum of 12 hits out of 15 is required to pass. Once you clear that threshold, your final classification is determined by completion time:
- Intermediate: 12+ hits, under 15 seconds
- Advanced: 13–14 hits, under 12.5 seconds
- Expert: 15 hits, under 10 seconds
Scoring 13 or 14 hits demonstrates advanced consistency. A perfect 15 reflects true mastery. Time standards then separate the levels. Breaking 10 seconds with a clean run is the expert benchmark.
How to Train for It
The key is to let accuracy drive speed, not the other way around. Build a deliberate rhythm through each engagement: mount, sights, trigger, follow-through. Maintain a consistent cheek weld and sight picture, and use a controlled breathing cycle to steady the rifle before each string.
For reloads, drill them in isolation until they're automatic. Clean, fast reloads are what separate intermediate from expert performance on this course. Economy of motion is everything. No wasted movement between strings.
Mental Approach
This drill rewards consistency and mental focus. It's not about racing the clock, it's about maintaining control as the clock runs. Build a deliberate rhythm and trust your mechanics. Progress comes from reliable, repeatable execution over time, not bursts of success.
Why It Matters
The Rifle Standard Gold is particularly valuable if you tend to neglect long-gun handling in your regular training. It sharpens both rifle skill and confidence by reinforcing disciplined gun handling and precision under stress. Measure your progress by consistency, not luck. Stay calm, shoot clean, and let performance speak for itself.
